On Thursday, December 15, 2017 Karen, Tracy, Shannon, MacKenzie, and Karlee left on a seven day vacation to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. With temperatures in the low to mid 80° and mostly blue skies, the girls had three days of beach time, fun activities, and good food and drinks. On Sunday evening Karen developed incessant vomitting that did not stop for 2 1/2 days. On Monday, Shannon and Tracy took Karen to the resort doctor for an evaluation. The doctor gave Karen two IV’s and anti-nausea medicine and told her she had a bacterial infection. Karen finally got out of bed late Wednesday, just barely strong enough to endure her four and one-half hour flight home the next day. In the meantime, Shannon and Tracy developed queasy stomachs. While everybody made it home without getting sick, Tracy developed an even more violent episode of Karen’s symptoms resulting in nearly a week of illness and dehydration. Shannon was also sick after arriving home but with less severe symptoms than Tracy. After Jim took Tracy to the hospital and had several tests performed, the doctor confirmed what the girls had self-diagnosed: salmonella poisoning which they contracted in Punta Cana. Needless to say it was not the vacation they all were anticipating.
